Polymer Clay for Mosaic and Mixed-media Artists and Embellishers
Students will make several batches of polymer clay tiles and then learn how to cut, shape, fit them and other hard materials to create mosaic/mixed media art!Watch Promo
I've recently read that online students prefer short classes.
To that I say: OOOPS! ;-)
This workshop is NOT short. It is long, and jam packed with firsthand knowledge and useful information. It includes 26 videos (averaging about 3 minutes long) that are focused on my hands doing their thing(s). You get a seat to the action that is smack dab in the midst of it all. See above Promo vid to get a taste of how the videos look and convey info.
I've literally documented the making of this piece, from beginning (prepping substrate) to how I made, shaped, cut, trimmed and fit all the polymer clay and store-bought tiles, to the final steps of finishing the substrate.
About 2/3's of this class focuses on polymer clay. I love this material! It empowers me to MAKE MY OWN tiles, in any color, thickness, shape I desire. And, you don't need a kiln! A toaster oven will do! I've completely fallen in love with this intimate and tactile relationship to tesserae. I love that my hands get to squish and modify this material until it transforms into a beautiful set of tiles that I can use in so many ways (demonstrated fully in this wshop)! You will learn how I made 5 different, and easy to make, tile batches and how I manipulate those tiles to fit in with the mosaic design.
The remaining 1/3 of the class is focused on tesserae more familiar to a mosaic maker: stained glass, glass tiles, mirror, and ceramic tile. You will see my hands cutting, trimming, and adhering these materials, too.
In addition to all of this, you will be provided tons of info on supplies, tools, and equipment and where to get them.
This is the foundation class to all forthcoming classes. The successive classes will be much shorter and inexpensive (under $50.) because I've put all the cutting, shaping, fitting info in this one. I've put all the basic info about color gradients, tools, storage, all the resources and purchasing info, and all the mosaic/mixed-media-making information in this one. I won't repeat this stuff in future classes.
The successive classes will simply be about making specific patterns & veneers for tilemaking. In 2020 I will publish several of these shortie classes, the topics of which will include transparent polymer clay, like that used in these pieces:
And a class that shows how I created the pattern in this ode to Klimt piece:
Join us! Unlike workshops in real life, you can take this workshop any time of the day, in your jammies or your 3-piece suit ;), on your phone or your big screen (I recommend your laptop or larger). You can jump around the curriculum in whatever order you like. You can simply watch the vids and ignore all the text, you can watch and re-watch specific videos as many times as you like (and laugh at my snaggly un-manicured artist fingernails ;)) Whatever works best for you! I really love that there is a somewhat "free range" feel to these online workshops. We all learn in such personal idiosyncratic ways and I love that this format is inclusive in that regard.
I've been creating mosaic art and teaching mosaic workshops for about 10 years now. My artwork has been in many exhibitions over the years, including most recently the annual prestigiious Crocker Kingsley (2019) and a couple times in Mosaic Art International (Navy Pier, Chicago and Museum of Man, San Diego). Several publications have featured my work including the cover of a college textbook, several how-to mosaic books, the blog Polymer Clay Daily, and magazines like Mosaic Art Now and Polymer Arts.
My first workshop was a community college class where we learned how to make a stepping stone. From there, I've taken many many courses from mosaic artists around the globe. I have taught classes internationally as well.
I really hope you enjoy my classes!
